CSPD Training Project
Module One: The Massachusetts IEP Process

Introduction — Assessment Data

The goal of this unit is to 1) have the participants reflect upon their district practices around the collection, evaluation, and synthesis of assessment data, and 2) develop a guide/model/template that will help them develop a comprehensive picture of the student and identify practical intervention strategies to address the student's needs.

The activities associated with this unit require several (at least three) complete assessment case studies from your district. The participants will work in small groups, with each member working with the same case studies. This unit should be presented in the following order:

  1. Assessment Data PowerPoint Presentation — Introduction to the goals of this unit, reviewing the need to collect, organize, analyze, and synthesize assessment data in order to develop appropriate interventions.

  2. Excerpt from "Assessing Children for the Presence of a Disability" — Putting It All Together: Interpreting Result and Summary (NICHCY) . Have participants read the one page article. Then, in small groups, discuss their district practices around the collection, evaluation, and synthesis of assessment data. Consider the following questions:

    • Who is responsible for collecting assessment data?
    • Is there a systemic approach to incorporating assessment data?
    • How are parents included in the process?
